I grew up in a previously small city called Kamunting, north of Taiping.
The History In Short
Taiping was previously known as Klian Pauh, a mining area that now includes the Drummond Hill, Taiping Lake Garden, and Penjara Taiping, and was managed by Datuk Paduka Setia Long Jaafar bin Long Abdul Latif. Long Jaafar was the son-in-law of Datuk Panglima Bukit Gantang Alang Alaidin.
Long Jaafar had a pet elephant, Larut. Larut was nowhere to be found for three days, and when found in a muddy area nearby, her leg was full of black tin ore. This was the opening of new mining area named Klian Bahru. Chinese Hakka Tribe Fui Chew (Pui Choy) was brought here, to Klian Bahru (Kamunting) in the 1840s. Klian Pauh (Taiping) was occupied by the Hakka Tribe Chen Sang. These Chinese were brought in to form a better, systematic mining. But it brought together the issue of gangsterism.
Klian Pauh (Taiping) was under the control of the Hai San gang. Klian Bahru (Kamunting) was under the Ghee Hin gang. Hai San gang attacked the Ghee Hin gang because of the water supply issue. These gangs triggered Perang Larut with the proxy of Raja Abdullah and Ngah Ibrahim (son of Long Jaafar). This event marked the English intervention in Taiping and Kamunting.
Nowadays
The mining area leaves a man-made legacy, such as the beautiful Taiping Lake Garden. Kamunting has and continues to grow as a heritage city.
And this is where all the stories begin...
